A colleague of Professor Randolph Stone describes him as “simply the greatest lawyer and teacher I have ever known.” Professor Stone is a leading expert in criminal and juvenile justice and has been a Clinical Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School for over fifteen years. Among many other accomplishments during his tenure there, he both created and directed the school’s Criminal and Juvenile Justice Project. Prior to his work at the University of Chicago, Professor Stone served as the Public Defender of Cook County. More recently, he assisted the law firm of Barack Ferrazzano Kirschbaum and Nagelberg LLP in starting the firm’s first organized pro bono program, and continues to serve in an advisory role to that already very successful and continually expanding program.
Professor Stone’s leadership and dedication inspire his students to critically examine the justice system and use their abilities to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. He frequently shares his expertise with the legal community through his noteworthy presentations and influential publications. His ability to clearly explain complex legal matters has made him a regular speaker on television and radio broadcasts, including NPR, Good Morning America, CNN, The Today Show, and the Oprah Winfrey Show.
Professor Stone often reminds his students: “The service that we give can make a difference. It can make a difference in a person’s life. It can change a policy or practice, and if we get lucky, we can change the course of human events.” Professor Stone’s legacy has undoubtedly made such a difference, through his own stellar work and through the inspiration he has given to countless students and lawyers to make a difference in their careers.
