2008 CBF Investing in Justice Campaign Raises over $1 Million

 05-10-2008
Chicago, IL – As the second annual Chicago Bar Foundation (CBF) Investing in Justice Campaign draws to a close, the CBF announced that by every measure the Campaign was an even bigger success than 2007’s groundbreaking inaugural effort. More than 40 law firms and corporations participated in this year’s Campaign (see the attached listing of 2008 participants), a 50% increase in participating firms from last year. More than 2,000 individual attorneys and legal professionals made financial contributions, and along with the many firms that matched donations in whole or in part, the Campaign raised more than $1 million in only its second year.

“The increased success of the Campaign this year is a definitive statement that Chicago’s legal community is willing to do its part to ensure that our justice system works for everyone, particularly the low-income and disadvantaged Chicagoans who most need its protections, said Thomas Z. Hayward, President of the CBF Board.  “We are just scratching the surface of what is possible through this Campaign in the future.  Our legal aid attorneys and their organizations deserve all the support we can give them.  We thank Dan Webb, our Steering Committee and our many Vice Chairs and volunteers for their outstanding leadership this year,” added Hayward.

The community-wide investment in the Campaign advances a cause that is uniquely important to lawyers and members of the legal community: ensuring that all Chicagoans, especially the most vulnerable, has access to justice. To that end, 100% of money raised in the 2008 Campaign will go towards CBF grants that advance that goal by: strengthening Chicago’s pro bono and legal aid organizations; giving these organizations the means to continue increasing their attorney salaries to sustainable levels; and underwriting innovative projects that make our justice system more user-friendly and accessible for those in need. [See the attached listing of the many organizations supported by the CBF.]

“The success of this year’s Campaign is a real tribute to the dedication and support of our Campaign leadership and the growing number of lawyers and other legal professionals who so generously contributed to this effort, and it will make a real difference in the lives of our colleagues in legal aid and the many thousands of vulnerable Chicagoans who depend on them,” said Dan Webb, who chaired this year’s Campaign.
