Legal aid providers faced real challenges

Anybody who has long been in the business of providing free legal services to the poor knows that even in the best of times, the demand for legal aid outstrips the supply.

"You have to keep in the back of your head, no matter how many people we have, we would never have enough people to serve all the people who need it," said Diana C. White, executive director of the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago, the largest provider of free civil legal services to poor and disadvantaged people in Cook County.  Read more. . .

 
New Report Shows Significant Advances over the Past 7 Years for Cook County's Pro Bono and Legal Aid System but Growing Number Of Low-Income People In Need Of Help

Only 300 legal aid attorneys to serve the civil legal needs of over 1.3 million low-income people in Cook County

With increased funding for legal aid services from most sources-particularly Chicago's legal community and area foundations- Cook County's pro bono and legal aid system has significantly increased its service capacity over the past seven years. However, this progress is tempered by the fact that pro bono and legal aid organizations in Cook County report skyrocketing demands for their help during this time period. 6th Annual CBA/CBF Pro Bono Week Attracts Record Participants

The Chicago Bar Association and The Chicago Bar Foundation cosponsored Chicago’s 6th Annual Pro Bono Week from October 25-29, 2010. This year’s theme was “Our Deeds Determine Us.” The theme urges lawyers to extend themselves by embracing volunteerism, especially efforts to make the law more just and the administration of justice more accessible.  Read more. . .

Joseph Gietl, a first-year law student at Loyola University Chicago School of Law, has received the 2010 Chicago Bar Foundation's Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Law Scholarship.

As the 2010 Marovitz Scholar, Gietl will receive $40,000 in financial assistance payable over his law school career, which will enable him to pursue a career in public interest law with a significant portion of his tuition and related expenses paid, the bar foundation said.   Read more. . .

The Chicago Bar Foundation has presented the 2010 CBF Sun-Times Public Interest Law Fellowship to five legal-aid attorneys.

The attorneys are Amany Sam Ezeldin of Life Span Center for Legal Services, which serves survivors of domestic violence; Mariangela F. Monteiro of Equip for Equality Inc., which provides legal assistance to and advocacy on behalf of disabled people; Melissa L. Staas of the Family Defense Center; Monica M.
