Kal Gibron talks the talk and walks the walk when it comes to pro bono and commitment to our community. Kal currently serves as Divisional Vice President of Real Estate and Real Estate Law for Sears Holding Corporation. Year after year, Kal has taken on new pro bono matters, led new projects, and found creative ways for his fellow in-house counsel to take on more pro bono work.

Kal led a team of Sears in-house attorneys in a project through the Community Economic Development Law Project (CEDLP) to represent low-income home buyers using Housing Choice vouchers to purchase homes. He also led in-house attorneys in the Highland Park Illinois Community Land Trust Pro Bono Project to provide affordable housing to first-time home buyers. Additionally, Kal puts his valuable knowledge of Arabic to work as a volunteer at pro bono clinics through the Arab American Bar Association.

In 2004, Kal became involved with the Street Law Program, which helps promote diversity in the legal profession, by partnering with Elgin School District U-46. The program connects a diverse population of low-income high school students with corporate attorneys who serve as role models and inspire the students to consider legal careers. In order to increase the program’s sustainability and continued support, Kal developed a strong partnership with the Chicago Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC), and his efforts resulted in attorneys from many different corporate legal departments becoming involved. His dedication has helped make the Elgin School District Street Law Program a success for the past five years, inspiring scores of future legal professionals.

Kal’s genuine enthusiasm inspires those who work with him to believe in the power and responsibility of the legal profession to improve our community.
